CHAPTER NINE
There was no getting away from it, the casino was a very exciting place. Maybe when Iâd seen it as often as Stud had it would begin to lose some of its glamour, but so far it had never failed to thrill me the moment I walked through its doors. Tonight, as always, I felt its immediate effect - a coercion to feel grander, more important ... a compulsion to add just a touch of the old 007 swagger to the walk.
I spotted Stud on roulette and sauntered over. As I approached, sixth sense made him glance round and he gave me a wink and a be-with-you-soon nod, so I wandered round the other tables until he joined me.
âHi,â he said, âyou look mighty spruce. Expectinâ a big time?â
âMummy always said dress up - you can always take them off.
Howâre you feeling?â
âWell, I was feeling knackered - until this Chinaman business. Heâs revived me. What the heck can it be?â
âObviously something to do with last night.â
He nodded. âGot to be. How else would he know you? Hey - youâre not famous or anything, are you ... not Viscount Tobin of Twickenham - travelling incognito?â
âNo ... donât think so. Has he been in tonight?â
âNot a sign. Listen, dâyou fancy that steak? Iâve only got forty minutes.â
âSure - Iâm starving.â
As we moved off towards the Bahamian Club he gave me a leer. âO.K. - whatâs all this crap about charades?â
âHuh! I thought you said thereâd be no repercussions from the party.â
His brow shot up. âWhy - what happened?â
âSon, I hadnât even got me boots off last night before the telephone rang ..
âNo kidding! Who was it?â
âA pussy cat whoâd been at the party and seen the lot - and fancied the same. Wanted to come over right then.â
âGood God. And of course you said no! â
âThatâs what I said - no.â
âHa!â
âIâm not kidding! Stud, I was shattered'
âYeh, I guess you were,â he said seriously.
âBut ...â I grinned.
âI had a feeling thereâd be more.â
âShe came over today - at two oâclock.â
âYeh!â he beamed. âWhat was she like?â
âFantastic.â
âYeh?â
âIncredible ... unbelievable ! â
âYou seeing her again?â
âYes, tomorrow, same time.â
âHas she got a pal?â
I shrugged evasively. âMaybe ... maybe not.â
âRuss ... old buddy ...â he put his arm round my shoulder. âDonât you agree that we have been put on this earth to help each other ... Russ, old friend, hm? Donât you go along all the way with that Christian principle? And did I mention that the steaks were on me tonight, hm ... hm?â
âIâll see what I can do,â I grinned.
As we entered the Bahamian Club Stud had a word with the maître dâ, requesting speed, and within five minutes we were seated before two incredible steaks.
âAll right,â he said, slicing into the succulent sirloin, âthis is the way I see it. I think heâs a chauffeur or something - delivering a message.â
âWho from?â
He shrugged. âNot the foggiest.â
âMmm ... mighty queer.â
âAnd that thought had crossed my mind, too.â
âEh?â
âWell ... who knows what sort of kinks were at the party last night? Itâs a possibility.
